Natural Language Acquisition

About

Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) therapy is designed to support children who are Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs). Unlike analytic language processors who learn language in single words and phrases, GLPs acquire language in "chunks" or gestalts—such as entire phrases or sentences they hear in their environment. These gestalts often carry emotional or situational meaning and serve as a foundation for language development.

NLA therapy is grounded in the understanding that GLPs progress through six stages as they move from echolalic speech (repeating phrases verbatim) to generative, flexible language. By identifying a child's current stage in this process, NLA therapy provides individualized, supportive interventions tailored to their unique language profile.

In therapy, we:

  • Honor and validate echolalic speech as a meaningful step in language development.

  • Scaffold communication by breaking down gestalts into smaller components.

  • Facilitate the creation of unique combinations, empowering children to construct their own phrases and sentences.

  • Encourage the natural progression through the stages of language acquisition, fostering confidence and autonomy.

NLA therapy is especially beneficial for neurodivergent children, including autistic children, as it respects their innate language learning style. Through play-based and engaging strategies, we work collaboratively with families to help children build the skills needed for authentic and generative communication.

Our ultimate goal is to support children in finding their voice, enabling them to connect with others in a way that is natural and meaningful to them.
